`i live in texas, so i do not know much about florida wilderness, but remeber to always have a knife or co2 pistol with you, although i love snakes, some are very violent and will chase you, and in the wilderness you may not be able to get to a hospital in time, and co2 pistols hurt them wich makes them run away normaly, if not you might have to kill... and it is also useful for would be punks who believe a hiker is an easy attack target.

Oh, really, which snakes will chase you? Is this one of those cases of the non-venomous common water snake, which the canoeist insists was a moccasin because it struck at him?

I was tramping through a swamp in South Carolina and almost stepped on an actual moccasin -- as in, it showed me its white mouth to warn me off. Once I backed off, it went back to lying around; it did not chase me. Most snake bites happen to idiots who got bitten while trying to kill the snake.
